“Whether you’re working on a novel or shorter fiction, the Three D’s are essential,” says instructor Lisa Moore Ramée. “This class will give you tips on how to create descriptions of a world and the characters in it, dialogue that rings true, and dramatic scenes with gripping conflict. These elements will make your story come to life!”

In this three-week class, you’ll build a story up from the basics using the Three D’s to fashion fully imagined, engaging worlds your readers can live in. You’ll have an opportunity to flesh out a story or character you’ve already envisioned or experiment with brand-new story ideas or set-ups. Through in-class writing prompts, voluntary writing exercises at home, and reading samples from popular books, you’ll learn:

  • How to examine whether your characters and settings are fully formed
  • How to use dialogue to build character and advance the plot in a believable fashion
  • How to test whether your drama has enough stakes to engage your reader

“By the end of the class, you will have created at least one scene that integrates the three D’s,” says Lisa. “Applying and combining these story elements will allow you to move confidently forward with your fiction writing aspirations.”

Reviews
  • Lisa's teaching style is great. She wanted the class to respond to students' goals and she was flexible in making time to answer our (many) questions! She is so encouraging, and she corrected me if I said something like "I could never be at X author's level." I took SO many notes throughout the class.
