Have you ever received insightful feedback on a work-in-progress that suddenly gave you a clear sense of purpose and direction? We writers often have hunches or inclinations about a piece we’re working on, and hearing other readers’ perspectives is the best way to know more definitively how our work is landing.

In the Writing Salon’s Feedback Circle classes, students will gain a vision and vocabulary to make craft decisions in creative pieces, for both early drafts and developed work, and to guide classmates through their own process. While there will be some generative writing activities in class, the bulk of time will be spent sharing creative pieces and giving and receiving feedback.

Students will take part in a range of light and moderate feedback sessions, often with first pages, rough sketches, or single scenes in hand. There will also be a workshop in which each student will receive extensive feedback on one developed work-in-progress. The maximum submission length for a workshop piece is 2,000 words. Outside of class, students must be prepared to work on their own writing and read classmates’ work.

“Revision will be an important component of the class,” says instructor Kathy Garlick. “You won’t merely receive nuts-and-bolts feedback on drafts for you to stow away in a drawer at home. You’ll be supplied with easy-to-follow guidance and direction so that you can keep refining and re-envisioning a creative piece.”

This class is designed for you to return to again and again for support, encouragement, and constructive feedback. While it will offer guidance and tools for what to do next with specific drafts AND you will likely make considerable progress on your creative work, it will provide an even greater benefit by helping you become a confident decision maker for all creative pieces you draft, develop, and refine in the future.
