“Whether you’re submitting poems to journals or putting them together for a book,” says instructor Lisa Gluskin Stonestreet, “learning how to order and present your work can give you a deeper understanding of how that work is received – and of what sets your poems apart."

Bring 10 poems to work with in this two-session class. In our first meeting, we’ll use play, exercise, and discussion to discover relationships between and among poems and develop frameworks for thinking about sequence and structure through the eye of the reader. We’ll also look at what the arc of a series or book can tell us about individual poems, and explore techniques for writing with a larger project in mind. Then in our second meeting, we’ll turn our attention outward. Are you ready to send out your work – and where should you send it? What tools and practices can help?

You’ll leave with an ordered packet of five poems to send to the journal of your choice, and a knowledge of how to submit effectively.

Reviews
  • I left Lisa’s class feeling inspired and moved to embrace myself as a writer and to begin identifying myself as such openly. I took in the message that I have something unique to say that only I can say. I learned some valuable skills that I will apply right away; most importantly how to stay present as I am writing and trust the process. That is of tremendous help to remember, especially when I am feeling stuck.
