“When people ask me for advice on submitting creative work,” says Amy G. Latham, published writer and literary journal editor, “I tell them to cast a wide net and have plenty of patience. Every writer collects more rejections than acceptances, but those who stay the course will find homes for their writing.”

Submitting fiction, poetry, essays, and hybrid works can feel daunting, especially if you are new to the process. How do you begin sorting through the thousands of print and online journals in the US and abroad? What are certain journals looking for, and how do you know if your work fits their aesthetic? We’ll tackle these and other important questions in this half-day class on demystifying literary submissions and the publication process.

In this class, you’ll get the insider perspective on what editors look for in literary submissions–what gets attention and what provokes debate in the lead-up to accepting pieces for publication. You’ll also learn submission strategies and tools of the trade, including what to stress in a cover letter and author bio, where to find contests and journals that seek work like yours, and how to navigate online submission platforms like Submittable, Chill Subs, and Duotrope.

As you learn more about the world of literary publishing, you’ll see that it’s not just about talent or luck, but about persistence and resilience. This class will give you the tools to stay the course and find the readers your work has been waiting for.
