“Authors are under increasing pressure to land on the right side of history as it pertains to characterizations, story themes, and personal views,” says instructor Kilby Blades. “Readers, critics, and industry demand cultural and social awareness. When authors get it wrong, the stakes are high.”

Just look at recent debacles—from sharp criticism of Jeannine Cummins’ American Dirt to allegations of transphobia on the part of JK Rowling. Callout culture and cancel culture leave little room for mistakes. It begs the question: how can authors eliminate their own blind spots and biases and turn each project into an opportunity to write more evolved work?

We will begin our exploration of writing “woke” fiction and nonfiction with a look at changing reader demographics, 21st century expectations, and the framing of diversity, inclusion, and identity through the creative lens. An in-class exercise will foster our discussion about own voices (lived experience) vs. interpretation. Using your current work-in-progress or story concept, a peer feedback session will introduce a framework that lets you practice questioning your story decisions. We will conclude with candid discussion and Q&A about how to avoid land mines and seek meaningful feedback about your work.
