“It’s easy to become separated from our creative spark,” says instructor Lisa Gluskin Stonestreet. “Sometimes we don’t know how to return from that stuck place. This remote course explores experiences of being lost—and ways of getting found.”
We’ll start with nine strategies drawn from Adrienne Rich’s essay “To invent what we desire” (in What Is Found There: Notebooks on Poetry and Politics), exploring how each of us might be silenced, or moved to speak. We’ll use guided meditation, visualization, and writing exercises to encounter and soften our resistance, reconnecting with the artist within us. Before the end of class, we’ll discuss what we’ve brought to the surface, emerging with concrete plans for diving back into the heart of our work.

Lisa Gluskin Stonestreet is the author of The Greenhouse (Frost Place Chapbook Prize) and Tulips, Water, Ash (Morse Poetry Prize). Her poems have appeared in journals such as Blackbird, Kenyon Review, Plume, and Zyzzyva, in anthologies including Nasty Women Poets and The Bloomsbury Anthology of Contemporary Jewish American Poetry, and online at Poem-A-Day and Poetry Daily. In addition to leading workshops at Portland’s Literary Arts, Seattle’s Hugo House, and The Writing Salon, she hosts the Portland reading series Lilla Lit and Literary Bingo and works as a freelance editor of poetry and nonfiction. Before fleeing northward in search of writer-friendly rents, she taught in UC Berkeley’s Post-Baccalaureate Writing Program.
