“Have you started drafting a nonfiction story and now crave fresh insight?” asks instructor Ann Guy. “In this supportive workshop, thoughtful feedback will help you clarify your intentions, refine your drafts, and bring your true story to life.”

In this 6-week workshop, students will distribute two pieces of up to 5,000 words each, along with initial questions to help focus reader feedback. Everyone will receive both written comments on their submissions and real-time feedback during class. Ann will facilitate the workshop to ensure that readers respond with curiosity, sensitivity, and generosity.

Though most of class time will be devoted to workshopping student writing, participants will read brief examples of nonfiction that illustrate innovative forms and techniques, like how to structure a piece, how to maintain narrative momentum, and when to linger in a moment. Short, prompt-driven writing exercises will enable everyone to practice what they’re learning and generate fresh material to move their stories forward.

Students will finish the class with new strategies for reworking or completing their pieces, as well as half a dozen fresh starts for potential new work. “Our goal is to focus on your vision for your piece,” says Ann. “This workshop will also create community, helping to turn the solitary act of writing into a shared experience.”

*Because of the nature of the workshop process, enrollment will be capped at 9 to ensure that ample attention is given to each writer and their work.
