Reading Latinx Poetry, Writing Our Truths

“Poetry is experiencing a renaissance in the amount of diverse representation that exists, and it’s something to cherish and learn from,” says instructor Alan Chazaro. “As a Mexican American millennial myself, I have been thrilled to read poets like Sonia Sanchez, Martin Espada, and David Tomas Martinez who are at the forefront of shaping what the Latinx community has to say about living in the modern world.”

Through select readings, discussions, and writing exercises in this 3-week online class, we will survey the landscape of Latinx writers as a way to inform our own sense of who we are and where we come from. In using this cultural mirror, we will have the opportunity to learn about wide-ranging experiences, as well as sharpen our literary awareness about poetic form, imagery, symbolism, and voice. Participants will be given a rich and authentic space to read and discuss poems, and we will engage with thematic topics by writing our own short poems in response.

Alan says, “From food, to love, to religion, and more, we will use universal frameworks to ask questions, read deeply, and share who we are.”

About The Writing Salon's Remote Classes
