The Poem Kit: Playing with Process

“In this class, rather than learning how one makes a poem,” says instructor Erin Rodoni, “we will approach craft by asking ‘How do I make this poem?’ Over the course of three weeks, we will follow the process of poem-making from first spark to fully formed vision.”

In the first class, we will discuss how we choose what goes into a poem. Writing exercises will help us find and vivify the most resonant sources for our poems such as our memories, observations, and experiences. In the second class, we will think about how we shape our poems and do exercises to strengthen our understanding of lines and stanzas, as well as the possibilities of form. In our final class, we will try our hand at revision, practicing useful and concrete strategies. At the same time, we will begin to define our own goals for our poems, whether we’re sharing the poem with a friend or aspiring to publish. In each class, there will be various opportunities to share work for light feedback and guidance.

Erin says, “Though there is no right way to make a poem, I hope by the end of this class you will have a real sense of how to make craft choices that are right for you and your poems. Writers of all levels and backgrounds are welcome.”
