“Great nonfiction isn’t just about conveying facts—it’s about making readers feel,” says instructor Ray Hsu. “What makes readers connect so deeply with Cheryl Strayed’s raw honesty in Wild or Ta-Nehisi Coates’ profound reflections in Between the World and Me? It’s the voice—the vulnerability woven into each sentence—that turns factual events into unforgettable emotional experiences.”
In this 5-week class, you’ll uncover and amplify the emotional heart of your stories, learning how to shape personal narratives that resonate for readers. Guided writing exercises during each session will help you tap into authentic emotional experiences—moments of joy intertwined with loss, anger touched by guilt—turning them into compelling scenes rich with nuance and depth.
You’ll draw inspiration and practical guidance from powerful examples by authors like Eula Biss, Charles Bowden, and Brenda Miller, examining how they capture complex, resonant emotions. Weekly assignments will invite you to refine your voice and dig deeper, while voluntary sharing sessions will offer opportunities for supportive feedback from Ray and your peers.
“By the end of 5 weeks,” says Ray, “you’ll have pages of fresh, vivid material, an enhanced ability to emotionally engage readers, and the confidence to write nonfiction that stays with readers long after they’ve left the page.”
