The Writing Salon’s brand-new Craft Series offers writers an up-close opportunity to learn from and engage with an acclaimed author about the art and craft of writing. In this first installment of the Craft Series, Nina Schuyler will delve into the intricacies of writing style. “While every story has been told,” Nina says, “style offers a way to tell it differently.”

Over two Craft Series sessions, Nina will use passages from her nonfiction book, How to Write Stunning Sentences, and her new novel, Afterword, to illustrate craft points and lead discussions and writing activities. She will share techniques that she incorporates in her own work, including her decision-making process behind selecting sentences, revision strategies at the sentence level, and how she brings her sentences to rich, musical life. Through in-class and at-home writing exercises, you will try out these techniques and strategies, and Nina will provide feedback.

Nina says, “After this two-session experience, you will have the ability to evoke emotions such as anxiety, suspense, tranquility, and euphoria at the sentence level, as well as the tools to craft prose that embodies your own singular voice.”
