"Have you always loved poetry but don’t know how to begin writing your own poems?" asks instructor Kathy Garlick. "Are you intimidated but intrigued by the art form, with its marriage of 'sound and sense'? Have you been writing poetry secretly for years, but kept it all hidden in a drawer or safely ensconced in the pages of your journal?"

In this 5-week class, we will explore poetry together, none of us traveling to precisely the same place, but all of us keeping one another company on the journey. Weekly writing prompts will surprise and inspire the imagination. So will our discussions on craft while reading the poetry of Claudia Rankine, Ocean Vuong, Mark Doty and Elizabeth Bishop, among others.

"Through both readings and writing exercises, we’ll discover what makes a poem a transformative event," says Kathy. "We’ll concentrate on writing with our own individual voices, our own emotional richness. By the end of five weeks, you’ll be able to uncover the emotional truths that most compel you to write.”
