Your life is full of stories worth telling—moments that shimmer with meaning, people who've left their mark, experiences that won't let you go. In Discover Creative Nonfiction, you’ll learn how to turn those stories into engaging narratives that come alive on the page.
“In this class,” says instructor Lauren Krauze, “we’ll approach writing as discovery. By playing with imaginative memoir and personal essays, we’ll open ourselves to what our stories want to reveal, not just what we think they should say.”
Each week will offer prompts and readings from contemporary writers such as Carmen Maria Machado, Terry Tempest Williams, and Saeed Jones, sparking ideas and offering models for craft. Together, we’ll notice how these writers approach structure, experiment with voice, and question traditional modes of storytelling. You’ll draft short pieces, optionally share work-in-progress, and receive light, encouraging feedback from your fellow writers.
This class is both playful and contemplative, a space to write bravely, to explore what feels just out of reach, and to uncover what only you can say. By the end, you’ll leave with a start to several pieces, a deeper understanding of creative nonfiction craft elements (particularly imagery and narrative organization), and drafting practices that will make you more courageous and confident in your unique approach to writing.
