She decided to intentionally pursue writing during her final year of middle school\, after her favorite English teacher spoke with her about her natural talent for creative writing and her potential to be a writer. In 2012\, Emily graduated from CSU Channel Islands\, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a creative writing emphasis. She enjoys memoir writing and the challenge of creating a piece that allows readers to be fully immersed in a personal experience. She holds an MFA from California State University Long Beach and is currently working on her first full-length manuscript\, Moonward Delirium. She has been awarded the Writing Salon Scholarship\, the Gerald Locklin Writing Prize\, and was a finalist in the 2018 Not a Cult Press Poetry competition. In 2020 she was named a Sustainable Arts Foundation Award recipient. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Frontier Poetry\, The Acentos Review\, and American Mustard. A twenty-three-time Pushcart nominee\, John is the winner of numerous literary awards\, including the Wabash Prize for Poetry\, Philip Booth Award\, and Laux/Millar Prize. He serves as editor of The Inflectionist Review and teaches for Literary Arts. He also works as a poetry editor\, writing coach\, workshop leader\, and literary agent.
