Lisa Alpine: Travel Writing; Your Writer’s Toolbox

Dear Lisa,

Just wanted to drop a note and tell you how invigorated I  was by your workshop on Saturday. Despite the fact that I’ve been a professional writer (staff and freelance) off and on for some 25 (!) years, I have found myself in the doldrums lately as I try to redesign my life. Besides enjoying your energy and humor, I really appreciated the concrete tips on everything from vivid writing to drumming up business. You certainly packed a lot into a one-day  class. It made me feel that it *is* possible to do some of  the things I’ve dreamed of.

I ran right home and registered a web domain name, and plan to follow through on the “assignments” you gave us over the next few weeks, between freelance odd jobs, personal writing, mothering, and housekeeping… I already have a writers’ group (newly formed from  another Writing Salon class) and basic journalism experience–I just need to put my ideas into action.

Many thanks again!

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the notes. Your class rocked, really the best  money I’ve spent on writing classes in a long time!

I’m working on the  homework today. Love that you  gave homework!

Hi Jane,

I thought Lisa Alpine did a wonderful job teaching the Travel Writing class last Saturday. So much material was covered in 6 hours and Lisa was thorough and comprehensive in her presentation. I especially loved her enthusiastic energy!

Dear Lisa,

I don’t know if you remember me – I took this workshop last year and suppose I was the only Belgian ever participating in your class 😉

Wanted to let you know your advice did help me a lot. I’m writing now for the main Belgian travel magazine and a luxury travel magazine in Holland. I even scored a first big cover story in November. I decided that ‘being able to write Dutch and Flemish’ was probably the best asset I had 😉

I used your same tips on the feminine magazines in Belgium and Holland – with success! I just signed a contract for 5 stories in the next months.

Thanks and good luck with the course!

Hi Lisa

This is Sven, curly fool from your travel writing work shop. Just wanted to tell you that I really had a great time on Saturday. The most important lesson I took from it was the reinforcement that it is possible to write your own script in life if you believe in what you do and if you do it with respect, patience and kindness. You are the embodiment of this lesson

Thank you!!

I’d like to say “thanks” for Lisa’s great travel writing workshop: well-presented and put together, lots of ideas, and fun! I enjoyed the other participants, as well; they were all very energetic and had a lot to contribute. Please add my recommendation to your (surely) long list of enthusiastic students.

Hi Lisa,

I thoroughly enjoyed your class!  It helped to make me even more excited about writing and traveling, and I appreciated the encouragement you gave me.  I’d take another class from you in a heartbeat – it was fun and as I was telling my partner and friends, the time went by so quickly and held my interest for the whole six hours!

Thanks again and happy journeys to you!  (I’m going back to Buenos Aires in October and I can’t wait to write about it!)

Dear Lisa,

Thanks for sharing your career insights with us on Saturday.  Besides your  wisdom, your travel tales, and your business common sense, the compulsive   tourist in me finally had a chance to get a tasted of Bernal Heights!

All the best,

Dear Lisa,

I attended your travel writing class on Saturday at the Writing Salon. I thought your presentation well organized and that you delivered practical, solid, useful information.  Mostly, I was impressed by how generous and encouraging you were. I enjoyed your class and feel very inspired to keep writing.

Anyway, thank you so much, and I hope to see you soon.

Best,
Susanna Corcoran

Dear Lisa,

Thanks for such an informative day jam-packed with useful information.  I couldn’t believe how much material you shared with us yesterday.  It’s the type of secretive information that I’m sure many people would want to keep for themselves to eliminate potential competition, yet you were so open and helpful with everything.  You’ve also managed to eliminate my biggest fear that I would read my first article aloud exposing my inexperience and lack of education only to hear “That Sucks.”  I can’t tell you how much better I feel to know that this has happened to you yet success was not far away.

I feel as if I’ve just awakened from years in a coma to find an electrifying future laying ahead.  I know this will change my life and I just can’t wait!

Love,
Phoebe

Dear Lisa:

Thank you for a wonderful book and class. WWW’s Stories of World Travel is
exciting to read. Your story, “Maddening Madagascar” made quite an
impression on me.  Sunday we went to a wine festival and concert. I couldn’t
help but think of the two rats eyeing your bottom in Madagascar.

I’m still digesting the class content.  Grateful for all the information
that you gave us.

Dear Lisa,

Thank you for the inspiring class last Saturday. I was sad to see the day end. You gave us practical details and also for me, a glimpse into the absolute pleasure of writing about ‘place.’ I was embarrassed to return from lunch late but I lost track of time on our assignment to collect dialog.

I was amazed at your insight into what each of us shared–it was like you had a tiny, tiny beam of light and you were able to point it exactly at the heart of the intent. That was cool.

Thank you again. It was an absolute pleasure.

Dear Lisa,

Your class was an inspiration for my own travel writing..the senses writing exercise will be really useful to me as I recover lost memories of my previous adventures, and in organizing my thoughts for future trips. I had thought that I would not be publishing anything but now I am considering that I might be able to put together some pieces for some publication.

Thanks again for sharing your own thrill of travel energy, and for the lovely day.

Best,

Nancy Bisio
